Ken Downie

Ken Downie is a veteran of the world of coin collecting and has an almost 40-year association with The Perth Mint.

As director and former CEO of Downies Collectables he takes the Mint’s numismatic coins to customers around Australia and throughout the world.

The Melbourne-based business, which was established by Ken’s father in 1932, is one of the Mint’s longest-standing and biggest distributors.

“There is no doubt The Perth Mint is one of the leading mints in the world. The quality of its products is certainly up there with the best,” he says.

“It has always had a strong reputation, and good relationships in the trade.”

Ken says releases featuring Australiana themes have always been popular with his customers and recalls the Sydney Olympics coin program, which The Perth Mint ran in conjunction with the Royal Australian Mint, as a highlight of the relationship.

“That program was a really big numismatic event,” Ken says. “The launch provided us our first $1 million day as a business in 1997 which was a real watershed for us.

“The 125th anniversary is a significant milestone in the Mint’s history. From the first sovereigns to the stunning designs of today, the Mint’s importance in our history is recorded forever in its products.”
